The Wi-Fi enabled RC Car

This is a short summary about my Wi-Fi enabled RC car.

The car was a 1:6 model of a SUV which I bought from eBay for about 40Euros(currently about 60US$). Strapped to this is a 266MHz dsl router running OpenWRT 0.9. Attached to this device is a USB web cam and some homebrew electronics to control the cam, the steering and the motor.

The car can be fully operated from a single remote computer which is also Wi-Fi enabled. Control commands are passed through a OpenVPN tunnel and video is streamed to the remote computer via a simple protocol.

The router is an Asus WL500GP which features two USB 2.0 ports on which the web cam is attached. The web cam is supported by the spca5xx-le driver and streaming is done by a program called servfox.

The care is controlled by a joy pad attached to the remote computer. Also the web cam can be tilted and panned via the game pad.

I will post some more information on this project after my exams in march.
